5 Ways to Prepare for Your Brand Photo Shoot
You've booked your brand photography session.
Congratulations!
Now comes the preparation phase, which is just as important as the shoot itself. The more prepared you are, the more confident you'll feel, and the better your photos will turn out. Here are five essential ways to prepare for your brand photoshoot so you can show up ready to shine.
1. Define Your Brand's Visual Identity
Before your photo shoot, take time to clarify what you want your brand photos to communicate. Ask yourself:
- What three words describe my brand personality? (Professional, approachable, creative, bold, etc.)
- Who is my ideal client, and what will resonate with them?
- Where will I use these photos? (Website, social media, marketing materials, press kit)
- What message do I want my audience to feel when they see my photos?
Create a mood board on Pinterest or save Instagram posts that capture the vibe you're going for. Share this with your photographer so they understand your vision. The clearer you are about your brand identity, the more cohesive and authentic your photos will be
2. Plan Your Outfits Strategically
Your wardrobe choices can make or break your brand photos. Here's how to choose outfits that photograph beautifully:
- Choose 3-5 complete outfits that reflect different aspects of your brand or different uses (casual social media content vs. professional website headshots).
- Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns. Busy patterns can be distracting and date your photos quickly. Jewel tones, neutrals, and colors that complement your brand palette work best.
- Bring layers and accessories. Blazers, scarves, jewelry, and glasses give you variety and can completely transform a look.
- Make sure everything fits well and is wrinkle-free. Try on your outfits a few days before the shoot and steam or iron everything the night before.
- Avoid logos and busy graphics unless they're part of your brand strategy.
- Pro tip: Lay out all your outfits and take a photo of each complete look (including shoes and accessories) so you stay organized on shoot day.
3. Gather Props and Brand Elements
Props tell your brand story and make your photos more dynamic and authentic. Think about items that represent what you do:
- Your product or work samples
- Laptop or tablet (make sure they're charged and screens are clean)
- Books, notebooks, or planners
- Coffee mug or water bottle
- Tools of your trade (camera, makeup brushes, design materials, etc.)
- Branded materials (business cards, packaging, signage)
Don't go overboard. Choose 5-10 meaningful items that feel natural to your brand. Your photographer will help you incorporate them in ways that look effortless, not staged.
4. Take Care of Yourself Before the Shoot
You want to look and feel your best on camera, so prioritize self-care in the days leading up to your session:
- Get plenty of sleep the night before. Well-rested eyes and skin make a noticeable difference.
- Stay hydrated for at least 2-3 days before your shoot. It helps your skin look fresh and glowing.
- Schedule grooming appointments in advance. Haircuts, color, nails, and any other services should be done 2-5 days before your shoot.
- For makeup: Keep it natural and slightly more defined than your everyday look. Avoid trying new products the day of your shoot. If you're hiring a makeup artist, do a trial run if possible.
- Eat a good meal before your session. You'll have more energy and feel more confident.
5. Prepare Your Mindset and Shot List
Feeling nervous about being in front of the camera is completely normal. Here's how to set yourself up for success:
- Create a shot list with your photographer ahead of time. Include must-have shots for specific purposes (LinkedIn headshot, website hero image, Instagram content, etc.) as well as any specific poses or settings you want.
- Practice in the mirror or take selfies to see which angles you prefer. This isn't about vanity; it's about understanding what makes you feel confident.
- Remember your "why." These photos are an investment in your business. They'll help you connect with your ideal clients and present yourself professionally across all platforms.
- Trust your photographer. You hired them for their expertise. Let them guide you through poses and expressions. The more you can relax and be yourself, the more authentic your photos will be.
- Bring a playlist of music that makes you feel confident and energized. Many photographers are happy to play it during your session.
You're Ready!
With these five preparation strategies, you'll walk into your brand photography session feeling confident, organized, and ready to capture images that truly represent your business. Remember, the goal isn't perfection, it's authenticity. Your ideal clients want to see the real you, and these photos will help them connect with your brand on a deeper level.
